Self-Assessment

Self-Assessment Worksheet

First-Year Writing | City College of New York

What is Self-Assessment & Why are We Doing it?

  • Self-Assessment is a form of reflection, and reflection is one of the best tools we have for learning. Reflection helps us to reinforce our knowledge because our awareness of what we know grows and fortifies when we consciously build a vocabulary for naming and discussing what we know.
  • Reflecting on what we’ve done and what we know allows us to self-assess our learning. And self-assessment is a skill offering us far more benefits than simply interpreting someone else’s assessment of our work. A major goal of this composition course, then, is for you to reflect on your learning and writing practices, name and discuss what you’ve learned, and then self-assess that learning.
  • This self-assessment will also prepare you to write our final essay, the Final Reflection Essay.
  • In the worksheet that follows you will
    1. Paraphrase (aka “re-write in your own words”) each of the Learning Goals for our course.
    2. Score your current level of learning each Learning Goal, using the following key:

0 – No learning/practicing

1 – Very little learning /practicing

2 – Some learning /practicing

3 – Good/average amount of learning/practicing

4 – Great amount of learning/practicing

5 – Outstanding learning/practicing

  1. Provide examples of any learning you experienced that connects to the Learning Goal. Explanations work as do hyperlinks to any documents you have online. Skip providing explanations for any Learning Goals that you have not yet worked on.

Briefly describe an example (or provide a hyperlink to your work) to demonstrate your level of learning.
1Examine how attitudes towards linguistic standards empower and oppress language users.Explored how the views on language standards can affect speakers positively + negatively.
4

An example is how I wrote about how discrimination against those using AAVE can make people who use AAVE feel as if they cannot be themselves. This made me think on the experiences that I and others have faced because we are different in a linguistic and verbal sense.
2Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.Analyze and explore a variety of rhetorical situations and genres.3https://nbcuacademy.com/black-southern-accent-discrimination-broadcast-news/ For example, for my synthesis essay, I researched and found an article on the discrimination black new reporters faced, and I analyzed it to use it to support my synthesis essay. This helped me a lot to further my analytical skills.
3Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.Develop methods for reading, drafting, collabs, revising + editing.4An example is how I often went back to make edits to  further explain something, fix grammar mistakes, shorten something so that it becomes more precise + easier to understand, provide an example, etc. I would often notice that I’d make repeated mistakes, such as incorrectly formatting, incorrect use of grammar, overwriting on some parts, etc. So developing new strategies really helped me to improve my essay-writing skills.
4Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.Be able to practice + even recognize the key strategies and rhetorical terms when writing.4I used different strategies within my writing; for example, 2 examples in one paragraph. In my essay, I used two quotes, using it to support my thesis that people using AAVE face discrimination in the workplace, media, and academia. It’s a useful skill, and helps me to better deliver my point to the readers.
5Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.Be able to use and understand digital + print to reach a wider variety of audiences.3For example, I used academic language and used a visual example to reach a wider range of audience. For me, it’s always been a struggle to choose what tone: academic or myself? But using this, I was able to focus more on one tone, even academic, a tone I often struggle with, and was able to provide a visual example to catch the readers’ attention, which is something that is more of me than academic. So I learned to be able t,o yes, academically write, but also slip in a small part of myself in my literature pieces.
6Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.Be able to locate a variety of research sources in the library’s databases/archives + on the internet + evaluate them for credibility, timeliness, accuracy, as well as potential bias.4For example, I went through the CCNY library database online to locate accurate, credible sources. I have never done this before, so it was very new and overwhelming to me, but now I have learned how to properly use it, because it proved to be a reliable, easier way to get accurate scholarly info off of the web, thus providing a very important, useful, amaze source to get my info for research papers from.
7Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation. To create texts that incorporate a stance w. Appropriate sources, using strategies (ex., Summary, analysis, synthesis, and arguments).3I incorporated different analyses: for example, how black characters in media who use AAVE are viewed as comedic, rebellious, etc, and how black characters who don’t are seen as intelligent, responsible, etc. This led to my research essays having a bigger impact, leaving my audiences with a better understanding of what I have written.
8Practice systematic application of citation conventions.Practice using citation conventions.4I made sure to use MLA format throughout my synthesis essay, something I didn’t realize I needed to pay more attention to..Because I fr ended up using APA T_T I don’t even think I was properly paying attention to it tbh, so I’m glad I was able to fix this issue and learned to always pay attention to what source I have to use.
